Ann’s Welcome Letter for the 2016-2017 School Year
Dear MSLF Community,
Fifty years ago, the founders of the Montessori School of Lake Forest were on fire to pursue Maria Montessori’s educational theories, and to put those theories into action for their children and the children of the future.
Your sons and daughters are the children of that future, and they continuously benefit from the vision of our founders:
- They learn from the best of teachers.
- They thrive socially, physically, academically in well-appointed and complete Montessori learning environments.
- They learn from original sources, including “the book of Nature” which they explore and absorb every day.
- They are guided to develop integrity and character by a strong adult community that strives to live with respect and responsibility.
- And they manifest our vision as alumni who prosper in their many fields of endeavor.
In choosing MSLF, you are indeed choosing all of these wonderful things for your child. And you are also choosing a vision for peace. In Maria Montessori’s words,
“Everyone talks about peace, but no one educates for peace. People educate for competition and this is the beginning of any war. When we educate to cooperate and be in solidarity with one another, that day we will be educating for peace.”
At MSLF, teachers and children and parents strive to be the change we want to see in the world. We do not turn away from the fact that the world not only needs good and ambitious minds, but also decent people to act upon their principles, to provide safety and opportunity for children from every walk of life.
At MSLF, your children attend a school which serves a widely varied demographic of families from at least 30 zip codes and 9 countries. The children here speak several languages, are of several different races and cultures, have varying economic backgrounds, and express a range of values. But there is one thing they hold in common with each other, and with all of the other children of the world: They know how to accept each other and work together, whether the task is mathematics or setting up snack; grammar or settling an argument; a dissection or cleaning up after themselves.
MSLF’s children of today are fulfilling Maria Montessori’s vision for them, as they manifest their love of learning and make their way to peace founded on solidarity. We adults are the stewards of their future. Let us do as good a job as our predecessors. Let us sustain their vigorous vision as we launch the next 50 years of excellent Montessori education at the Montessori School of Lake Forest, on behalf of our children, and the children of their future.
Happy 50th Birthday to the Montessori School of Lake Forest, and Welcome to the 2016-17 school year! I hope that the love of learning has inspired you throughout the lovely summer days, and that you will return to school refreshed and ready for learning, on Monday, August 29th.
See you then!
